Was informed by a sporting goods store employee/fisherman that using Spiderwire will cut through steel and even ceramic rod guides and destroy the reels levelwind guide on all but titanium coated parts! Anyone have any experience/knowledge re: this and what line would you recommend instead for springers/keeper size sturgeon? Thanks again!

I can confirm these fiber lines will cut through wire rng guides and chrome finished ring guides. Even saw a roller guide where the roller wasn't rolling free that had a cut in the roller. In the past five or so years that I've been using these lines I have not seen any problems with the line cutting a ceramic ring guide.

As for cutting the guide on a level wind - I have never seen this but would guess it is possible. I've used a Penn 109 for several years with Power Pro line and haven't seen any cutting of the level wind guide.

Especially in salt water where the fiber will adsorp metals and minerals.

spectra will eat thru metal guides like Opra in a buffet. most rods come with ceramic guides now and this will not be a problem. Unfortunatly Berkley and some other brands have gone to the new breed of ultra lite guides to save money and these are very vounerable to cutting. I have had 15lb. powerpro on my STR1263c for almost a year now for float fishing and have not had a problem. Just stay away from the crappy rods and enjoy!

I can confirm that Power Pro does not cut through ceramic guides or bother a Penn 109 - I fish way more that average, am in the 3 card a year class, and have never had any problems. Cuts your hands when tightening up knots nicely though

I have been a Berkley guide for going on 4 years and swear by SPIDERWIRE. Now given I am a Berkley guide, Spiderwire is made of the same material as the other leading brands just a different configuration.(ie; Whiplash, Spiderwire, Fireline, and Spiderwire Stealth) If the guide is damaged it, in a simple explaination, can be explained by a low quality guide. I use Spiderwire 200 days a year and love the stuff. Check your equipment out then register an opinion. PS they have "cool logos".
